Sažetak
Gnathology is an approach to the science of occlusion and one of the procedures in the diagnosis and treatment of the function. The basis of the gnathology is the principle of a maximally retruded position of the condyle, due to its good reproducibility on the articulator, is often overvalued. The standpoint of the classical gnathologists that the occlusion of each prosthesis must be made in the most dorsal postition of the condyles is identical with the maximally centered cranial postiton, and the maximal intercuspidation must be in conformity with such postition of the condyle. The definitions used in the literature in connection with the occlusion are not always precise. The same terms are used for different notions. A demistification can be obtained if the terms are brought to a reasonable number. The central relation is not an unchangeable value. Many variable factors prove that the temporomandibular joint has a wide amplitude of adjustment and reconstructive possibility, which denies the basic standpoint of the classical gnathologists.
