Sažetak
The article deals with classifying the physics content in the UDC classification system. It consists of five parts. The first, introductory part, presents the main branches in physics as well as the purpose of the article. The structure, properties and characteristic features of the UDC class 53 – Physics from the UDC Master Reference File, version 1998-12 (the Croatian translation) are described in the second part. The main supplements and modifications in class 53 of the new, English edition of UDC MRF – version 2010, are briefly described in the third part. The fourth part presents annotations and suggestions for additional supplements/modifications of the UDC numbers in both editions of the UDC tables in order to increase the accuracy of classifying content in the field of physics. The physics terminology is very specific and it is continuously being upgraded with new interdisciplinary terms and concepts as a result of modern scientific and technological development. The conclusion is that the librarians who classify the physics content must have a very good knowledge of physics, i. e. they have to be professional physicists. This is the only way to achieve satisfactory and accurate UDC classification in the field of physics.
