Discoloration and hypoplasia of the teeth resulting from tetracycline treatment

Sažetak
The author noticed over the past years a growing number of children with discolored teeth and hypoplastic changes. Investigating the teeth which showed discoloration in 58 girls and boys aged between 5 and 14, he established that the harmful consequences of tetracycline tretament were to blame for these changes. The necessity of a close cooperation between the dentist, the paediatrician and specialists in other medical branches is emphasized for the purpose of studying dental pathology jointly. It sometimes happens that dentists neglect the harmful phenomena on the teeth described, in spite of the fact that these are of permanent nature and present a serious esthetic defect for the patient. In view of the aforesaid it is recommended to avoid prescribing tetracycline preparations during pregnancy, in the treatment of newborns and in small children, i. e. during the development phase of the teeth (from the 4th foetal month to the age of 7 years) as there exists a number of antibiotics with a similar effect which can successfully replace the tetracycline drugs.
