Sažetak

Abstract
The paper presents results of measuring the content of heavy and other metals in waste samples from the hazardous waste disposal site of Sovjak near Rijeka. The preliminary design elaboration and the choice of the waste disposal sanification technology were preceded by the sampling and physico-chemical analyses of disposed waste, enabling its categorization.
The following spectroscopic methods were applied on metal content analysis: Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and plasma emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Waste samples were measured in the course of 1997 and 1998 respectively, while the results obtained have revealed the presence of the following toxic metals: Zn, Pb, Cr, Cu, Cd, and Ni, which remain environmentally hazardous even after a prolonged presence in the soil.
The measurement results obtained have shown that AAS method is better for detecting some metals. On the other hand, ICP-OES method is characterized by simultaneous measurement of a large number of metals from the same sample, thus speeding up the analysis. RSD of both spectroscopic methods for tested samples ranged from 5-10%.
