Sažetak
Referring to relevant legal acts, the author shows that religious education is a part of the educational curriculum and as such under the care of the state and civil authorities. The article discusses the basic requirements that a person must have to teach religious education in primary and secondary schools. Initial training of RE teachers is entrusted to the theological colleges. The author presents the key competencies that RE teachers acquire through their initial education and lists some initiatives at the Catholic Theological Faculty in Zagreb, which are related to the initial formation of RE teachers. In addition to initial training it is important to monitor the quality of religious education and the teacher's development and organizing quality permanent formation. In the Republic of Croatia the permanent formation of RE teachers is organized by the state and church. Thus, permanent formation occurs in conjunction with important ecclesiastical authorities (National Catechetical Office of the Croatian Bishop's Conference, catechetical arch/diocesan offices) and the Croatian Education and Teacher Training Agency. The author also presents the results of research in which RE teachers assess the quality of initial and ongoing formation.
