Sažetak

Within the context of the church the interconnection of evangelization and education is very important. Therefore, a comprehensive Christian education always leads to an openness to the faith, as evidenced by early Christian tradition. Today, within Christian education of young people there is some ambivalence: on the one hand there is an emphasis on emotions and all that is specifically "human", but there is a lack of education for a choice of faith in Jesus Christ. Pope Benedict XVI invites us to "awake" in order for religious education to remain consistent with its original nature and directed towards an encounter with the Lord. Today we are faced with a great challenge and an inevitable and urgent need for education. The Pope mentioned this on numerous occasions, for example in his letter to the diocese of Rome, to the Italian National Congress in Verona, in a speech to the Salesians at their General Council and in a speech at the Catholic University in Washington. The author recalls the Pope's directions to youth, families, schools and mass media. The Pope speaks primarily as a shepherd and not as a teacher. He gives special attention to the human person, education for truth, freedom and an active Christian love. A comprehensive education can not be achieved only by theoretical instruction, but through daily example of coexistence and mutual encounters.
