Sažetak

The purpose of this epidemiological study was to establish the pre-sence and prevalence of dental caries in children of Split area, to analyse the frequency and intensity of caries according to age and sex, to assess the structure of the DMF index of the permanent teeth and to determine the necessities for the improvement of the present state. Wo examined 3848 school children, 7 to 14 years old from Split area, 1929 girl and 1919 boys. For the registration of caries we used the DMF index of the permanent teeth where one tooth served as a registration unit. We came to the following conclusions: — high values of general caries frequency were found, ranging from 62,3% to 99,0% ; — values of relative caries frequency ranged from 18,2% to 34,2%; — the intensity of caries ranged from 1,5 to 9,5 with an average of 5,3 DMF tooth per child for the whole population; — the highest values of caries prevalence were found in the children from the Dalmatian hinterland; —there is no significant difference in the values of caries preva-lence in relation to sex. — the structure of the DMF index shows that a great number of caries lesions has not been treated at all; — we should plan such a range of stomatological activities as to satisfy the preventive and treatment needs of the children, including the socio-medical aspect of dental caries as an epidemiological di-sease.
