Sažetak

The state of oral health and the needs to sanify it in the 12- and 15-year children in Zagreb and Novi Sad as assessed by means of the new WHO form are presented. Among the 12-year-olds, 95.5% and the whole 100% of them were found to be affected by dental caries in Zagreb and Novi Sad, respectively, whereas among the 15-year-olds these percentages were 98.3% and 100% in Zagreb and Novi Sad, respectively. Among the 12- and 15-year-olds in Zagreb the mean DMF was 6.2 and 10.1 in Zagreb, and 6.0 and 9.0 in Novi Sad, respectively. The rate of improvement including all the children examined did not exceed 47.7%. Extractions were necessary in 11.1% of children. Compound (two-surface) fillings were therapeutically most frequently required and used in more than 50% of cases. Oral hygiene is at a very low level, as judged by bleeding and dental calculus found in the whole 100% of children. The percentage of children with anomalies ranges from 44% to 74%, whereas the rate of therapy required was between 21% and 37%. This screening has shown the new WHO form for the assessment of the state of oral health and the needs to improve it to be very practical and applicable to our conditions. Thus we could conclude it should be introduced in all epidemiological studies in our country as soon as possible. In such a way we could compare our results to those obtained in other countries, contributing thereby to a more rapid development of the stomatological profession and science.
