Sažetak

Health care in Croatia is considered a high-hazard activity, due to the fact that health care workers are exposed to numerous occupational hazards and harm. Repeated exposure to negative or demanding working conditions results in psycho-physiological imbalance which in the long-term results in chronic health problems and the occurrence of presentism and absentism in the workplace. Presentism occurs when employees come to work, but do not work according to a defined work plan, resulting in decreased productivity and reduced quality of work. Absentism is defined as any kind of absence from the workplace. Although presentism and absentism are opposite terms, the negative influence on business achievements is quite similar in both cases. The issue of presentism and absentism in health care is especially important for health care workers, who use health care the same as other beneficiaries of the health care system, but as employees in that same system, they provide health care as well. Therefore, the health of the health care workers has a great influence on the health of the patients and the general quality of health care. Presentism and absentism of health care workers can potentially endanger a large number of patients, which increases the costs in the health care system and compromises the quality of work performed by health care workers and the general quality of health care.
