The Class-professional Structure of Inhabitants in New Settlements of Privately-built Houses in Čakovec
Nada Kerovec
Sažetak
The purpose of this research
project was to establish the
existence of class-professional
differences among the population of
a small town — Čakovec. The
starting hypothesis was that there
are differences in some socio-
-economic, socio-demographic and
socio-professional characteristics
among the population in new
settlements made up of privately
built houses. It is to be expected
that different physical
characteristics of town quarters
(type of house, type of fence,
appearance of the yards and
gardens) reflect different regional
and class-professional characteristics
of their inhabitants.
Three settlements built after the
war were chosen: Travnik, Vojni
vrtovi and Globetka. The enquiry
included about 80% of their
population, i.e. the questionnaire
was filled in by 135 representatives
of 'the 160 families that live in
them.
The results show that Vojni vrtovi
are the youngest settlement in age
of inhabitants. About 70% are
under 40, and as many as 20% are
under 30.
As a rule, all the families are
owners or part-owners of family
houses. In the other two settlements
over 50% of the population is over
40. The inhabitants of Globetka have
the highest level of education
(30.6% have university education,
and onlv 2.8% have up to four classes of elementary school), and
the inhabitants of Travnik the
lowest (2.9% have university
education, and 28.6% up to four
classes of elementary school).
The occupation of the population in
the settlements corresponds with
their educational structure: there
are most administrative-professional
workers and managers in Globetka,
and least in Travnik; there are
most housewives in Travnik and
least in Globetka. Over half the
population of Globetka moved there
from socially owned flats. Over half
the population of Travnik used to
live in rented rooms. The
inhabitants of Travnik live in the
smallest houses, and the population
of Vojni vrtovi in the largest.
According to selected indicators of
standard of living (ownership of
automobile, telephone, household
appliances etc.) the population of
Globetka have the highest standard,
and the population of Travnik the
lowest.
On the basis of the data obtained,
the author concludes that people
concentrates in a settlement
according to their level of education,
profession and income.
