Woman's Time and Space: On the Example of Woman-Artists in Croatia
Jasenka Kodrnja
Sažetak
The author in this article presents a part of research results of woman-artists social status,
carried out in the year 1998 on the base of experience and insight gained during the realisation
of the project The artist in social context (1985). The goals of research were to establish
the presence of the woman as the subject of art (what during history, as well as in present
time, was noted as an empty place, as marginality, hierarchical subordinaton and as
asimetric position), and her specific gender distinction. Namely, until recently the category
of gender in theory, history and sociology of art, and in the criticism of art has been
neglected and almost unrecognised.
Since the whole human experience is gender determinated, the space and the time in
women-artists’ experience also demonstrate their gender component, analysis of which is
the goal of the research segment presented in this paper. In accordance with feminist
methodology, e.g. starting from the methodology of feminism studies, social position of
women-artists in Croatia and space and time gender component in the women-artists’
experience are researched by combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The
data was colected by interview in two times with two different questionnaries on the sample
of 30 women-artists in the Republic of Croatia. The sample was planed as unproportionally
stratificated, and the lady respondents were chosen by the criterion of artistic activity
and working status. On the basis of the Antique mythology and in the way of Weber’s
ideal types the author establishes the typology (Muses, Nymphs, Eurinomes etc.), which
expresses different paterns of feministic identity, and the feminist experience of space and
time, respectively.
