The Role of the Maritime and Traffic Policies as a Function of Sustainable Development of Traffic and Shipping Industry

Sažetak
The paper presents an analysis of the role of maritime policy as an integral part of traffic policy and the total economic policy as a function of sustainable development of the traffic and maritime shipping system. The role has been considered in the link between the national maritime and traffic policy of the Republic of Croatia and the maritime and traffic policy of the European Union, within the global shipping market as a unique category. Based on the analysis performed, the authors are induced to conclude that clearly determined strategic measures and precisely determined targets represent the basis for an efficient traffic and maritime policy, and the duly adjusted national policy with guidelines for the maritime and traffic policy of the European Union, and with respect for global features of the world shipping market, are the necessary prerequisites for the development of an efficient traffic and maritime system in the function of the realization of the economic growth based on the concept of sustainable development. Sustainable development, considered as a specific concept of strategic orientation, represents the basis for public policies to be based on in the function of the development of traffic and maritime shipping, whereas the harmonization of the shipping and traffic policy of the Republic of Croatia with the European Union policy represents an important development-oriented commitment of the Republic of Croatia. Such a development-oriented commitment may contribute to accelerated development of shipping industry based on clearly determined integrate shipping and traffic policy.
