Sažetak

According to the generally accepted definition, campuses are places where university activities and extra-curricular activities, as well as accommodation and social life of students and teaching staff occurs. Transport systems are an important segment of campus organisation because they provide access to facilities and working conditions within the campus. This paper presents an analysis of available data on traffic systems in campuses in the United States through the presentation of the research conducted in eight university campuses. European campuses in the UK, Germany and Spain and their transport systems and transport organisation have been analysed as well. These campuses offer the example of campuses based on sustainable transport modes. The paper presents an overview of the transport system in the campus of the University of Rijeka, its strengths and weaknesses as well as opportunities for further development based on positive foreign experience. It has been shown that the development of transport systems and modal split on college campuses primarily depends on transport policy and programmes that encourage sustainable forms of transport - public transportation and non-motorized forms of transport. The aim of the paper is to give an overview of the existing ways of organisation of traffic systems in university campuses, primarily in developed countries, with the goal to implement positive experiences in Croatian campuses.
