Sažetak

The paper provides an overview of external infrastructure costs, noxious gas emissions, noise, accidents and congestion in inland waterway transport. Models and comparative calculations of external costs for individual European countries have been considered in relation to prices paid by respective polluters. The level of external costs and the formation of charges in respect of infrastructure, gas emissions, noise, accidents and congestion are affected by the standard and development level of each country, prices and share of individual transport categories, and the environmental awareness of the country itself.
Croatia being mainly a transit country in terms of the exploitation of inland waterways, it is of great importance within its economic development to identify and properly establish charges to cover the external cost. Therefore, it is the aim of this study to point to the need for economic and ecological assessment of inland waterways.
