Waste Management in Inland Navigation

Sažetak
The issue of waste management in inland navigation has been getting increasingly important with the growing of this branch of transport and with the integration of the Republic of Croatia in the European Union. Waste management issues are governed by EU regulations, national regulations and international treaties. The aim of this paper is to determine the extent the harmonization of national and European regulations has reached. The paper presents an analysis of regulations in Croatia and other Danube valley countries, research outcomes concerning waste practices along the Danube, and points out the existing shortcomings and possibilities for improvements in this field. Improvements are possible to achieve through international cooperation and harmonization. Croatian inland ports – Osijek and Vukovar – are situated along the E-inland waterway and they enjoy the international status which makes them additionally obliged to provide appropriate waste infrastructure in order to be able to accept all waste types as required. Today, the existing waste collection equipment is insufficient and not all waste types produced by vessels can be accepted. The infrastructure requires upgrading. Based on data collected on board vessels, research has been carried out in respect of on-board waste disposal data collection and certain measures have been proposed toward waste management improvements.
