Natural Population Change in the SR Croatia According to Type of Residential Settlement
Ivica Nejašmić
Sažetak
In the period 1963—1984 increased
differentiation occurred in the
natural population change in the
SR Croatia, from the aspect of
»type of residential settlement«.
These was a marked annual
oscillation in birth rate and a
tendency of decrease (the average
birth rate for the SR Croatia is
15.0). In the urban group of
settlements the birt rate increased
until 1979, then began to decrease,
and at the end of the period reached
the same value it had at its
beginning (15.7 per thousand);
mixed settlements followed the rate
of the general population; and the
rural group of settlements showed
the greatest decrease of the general
rate (index 68.9). In the period
studied, the urban population has
become the bearer of
bioreproduction and in recent years
it has had twice as many live-born
children as the rural population.
The death rate has increased
considerably (index 128.6, average
value 10.3 per thousand). The death
rate has increased most in the rural
group (index 149.8), it is average in
the mixed group (index 127.2). and
smallest in the urban group of
settlements (117.9).
Diverging changes in birth and
death rate have speeded up the
decrease of the natural population
growth, which was only 2.3 per
thousand in 1984 (index 31.1). The
natural population growth decreased
in all groups, but the course was
different: the urban group had least
change (index 82.3), the mixed group
almost average values (index 29.4).
and the rural group has had a
negative change (natural decrease)
since the mid-seventies.
The continuation of the present
tendencies can be expected in future.
By the end of the century the
SR Croatia will have a negative
population growth (—1.3 per
thousand). Differentiation according
to type of settlement will continue
to be prominnent: the urban group
will have a relatively gentle
population decrease, the mixed
group will reach negative values in
the mid-nineties, and the negative
values already present in the rural group will increase many times
(in the year 200, —11.2 per
thousand).
