Sažetak
The aim of this research was to examine the relationship between four specific functional measures of hearing and two common receptive measures – the pure tone average (PTA) and the audiogram configuration – in order to determine the predictive potential of the respective receptive measures or to compare their potential to form expectations about the function of hearing.
The functionality of hearing was examined in 29 prelingually hearing-impaired subjects (the mean chronological age: 18.8 years; PTA: 96 dB) by using a word identification task. A cluster analysis was
applied to group the subjects according to their functional results. A discriminant analysis was carried out to test the differences in the receptive properties of the formed functional clusters. Finally, the possibility to predict the functionality of hearing on the basis of the receptive variables was examined through a classification analysis. Although PTA showed a stronger relation to the overall results of the functional task, both observed receptive measures were good general indicators of the hearing function, but to a certain extent. In the category of a profound hearing loss, the hearing function was predicted by reception variables with the 95.4% accuracy. However, in the category of a severe hearing loss, some subjects with a lesser PTA were appointed to the least successful functional group and some subjects with a considerably higher pure tone average were appointed to the most successful functional group. An inspection of the qualitative data showed that the functionality of hearing cannot be predicted on the basis of receptive measures exclusively, because the prognosis also depends on other factors (habilitative, personal and other).
