Sažetak

Osteoporosis is a huge public health problem because it is directly related with fractures. A number of genetic and environmental factors are interweaving in the complex pathophysiology. These factors determine peak bone mass and the degree (rapidity) of bone loss later on. Understanding of the molecular mechanism of bone formation and remodeling, as well as understanding of factors responsible for bone quality (strenght) have been significantly improved over the last few years. Thorough knowledge of postmenopausal osteoporosis pathophysiology is the prerequisite for effective prevention and treatment of the disease.
