Sažetak

Aim: Labial and lingual frenum constitute normal anatomical features of the oral cavity. The frenums are considered pathological when they become main causative factors of persistent diastema mediana, gingival recession of upper and lower central incisors or of un- obtainable appropriate oral hygiene. The inability of wearing mobile dental appliances as well as speech difficulties can also be caused by pathological frenum. The aim of this study is to review the prevalence of frenectomy procedures during a period of three years in the op- erating room of the Clinic of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery of the Clinical Hospital Centre of Rijeka. The procedures were classified according to patients’ age, gender, clinical diagnosis and the overall annual surgical procedures. Methods: The study comprises an overall number of 4690 oral surgery procedures performed during 3 consecutive years (2011, 2012, 2013), of which frenectomies make 42 of the overall number of surgical procedures. Results: Frenectomies make 1 % of the annual oral surgery procedures performed at the clinic. The prevalence of female patients is higher (59.5 %) than males. Younger patients make 86 % of frenectomy patients. The incidence of superior labial frenum hypertrophy is higher in comparison to other frenum anatomic localizations. Conclusion: The data collected at the Clinic for Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery of the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka are in correlation with other studies. There is a wide difference in opinions regarding the clinical significance and optimal management of frenectomies, hence the appropriate diagnostic criteria as well as the possible surgical techniques must be evaluated.
