Contemporary Migration Processes in South Ukraine

Sažetak

The paper deals with migration, and is intended to provide a view of some of the major migration trends in the south Ukraine. The data for analysis is derived from the last censuses (1979 and 1989). Four southern regions of the Ukraine are in focus – Odessa, Nikolayev, Herson and Donetsk, with the main emphasis on the ethnonational dynamics in contemporary migration patterns within these regions and beyond. Whilst migration itself is a process to a varying degree special for nearly all the Ukraine's ethnic communities, the highest immigration rates were recorded among the largest groups. The latter include ethnic Russians, Belorussians, Tartars and Armenians. As for emigration, the share lead has been (and is very likely to remain so for some time yet) with the Jewish group, followed by Bulgarians and Greeks. In the same period, the proportion of Germans has increased rather than decreased. All in all, the migration flow into the Ukraine over the last decade has risen considerable, which is only fair for the region in question as well.
