Sažetak

The paper analyses some aspects of the social-demographic situation of the Ukrainian ethnic group in Canada, which bear witness to the integration of its members in Canadian society. The formation of the Ukrainian ethnic group in this country passed through three stages: from the final decades of the 19th century till the First World War; from the beginning of the 1920s till the end of the Second World War; the post-war period. Emigration from Ukraine which has recently become noticeable has not essentially brought about quantitative or qualitative changes in the Ukrainian ethnic group. Among the indices which confirm the notion that members of the group have integrated themselves into the social-demographic structure of Canadian society, the author notices: dispersive settlement (in all the provinces and territories of the country), urbanisation which recently has surpassed the Canadian average; an increase in the number of persons born in Canada (87,5%); a growing similarity between the employment structure of the working-age population and the employment structure typical for Canada as a whole; growth of the incomes of Ukrainian families (recently they have surpassed average statistical indicators); increase in the level of education etc. The author draws attention to the higher level of social mobility among persons born in Canada. The paper examines the terminology used in Ukrainian migrantology for indicating the studied phenomenon. The most fitting term would be Canadians of Ukrainian origin, which reflects the specificity – belonging to the Canadian ethnopolitical organism (state) and preservation of Ukrainian ethnicity. The term “Ukrainian immigration” emphasises the immigrant descent of the Ukrai¬nian ethnic group of Canada.
