Abstract

A partly preserved Register of Births from 17th century and Deaths from 17th and 18th centuries, the state of the souls in 1768, 1772 and 1776, and the books of the members of the religious brotherhood Gospa od Karmena (Our Lady of Mount Carmel) from 1764 (not yet published) reveal numerous data on the inhabitants of and conditions in the then Supetar. By basing it on these sources during 18th century Supetar grew from a settlement of only three hundred inhabitants into a place with more than a thousand inhabitants in less then 70 years. The people from Supetar were very efficient in maritime activities, as the register of a great number of shipowners shows, resulting in economic prosperity. One of the proofs of the well-being of its inhabitants is a large number of artisans and educated people.
