Sažetak

Aim. The aim of this study is to analyse medical emergency interventions on children´s accidents in the age group of 0 to19 years old in the 4 year period since the beginning of 2010 until the end of 2013, in the area of the City of Zagreb,.

Methods: Official data from 2010 to 2013 were analysed according to types of injuries: traffic, drowning, poisoning, burns, falls and other injuries, all of which are unintentional injuries, as well as suicide attempts, which are characterized as intentional injuries. We also analysed official data in the age groups of 0 to 1, 1 to 4, 5 to 9, 10 to 14 and 15 to 19 years old.

Results. From 2010 to 2013 the number of all medical emergency interventions in the City of Zagreb on underage patients was 1,811. We analysed 527 interventions on children’s accidents. We found 48 traffic accidents, 0 drownings, 296 poisonings, 6 burns, 100 falls and 41 other accidents. Other accidents consist of dog bites, fights and contacts with sharp or blunt objects. The number of suicide attempts was 36. In the age group 0 to 1 years old we found 1 case of poisoning. In the age group 1 to 4 years old there were 2 interventions for traffic accidents, 1 burn, 2 falls and 1 intervention for other accidents. In the age group 5 to 9 years old we found 4 traffics accidents, 2 poisonings, 1 burn, 5 falls and 1 other accident. In the age group 10 to 14 years old there were 8 interventions of emergency medical aid to traffic accidents, 39 poisonings, 0 burns, 25 falls, 12 other accidents and 3 suicide attempts. In the age group 15 to 19 years old there were 36 traffic accidents, 252 poisonings, 4 burns, 68 falls, 27 other accidents and 33 suicide attempts.

Conclusion. The most emergency medical assistance was needed in the age group of 15 to 19 years old due to poisoning, mostly caused by alcohol intoxication. This accounted for 48% of all interventions on children`s accidents. The limitation of our study is the short time period from 2010 to 2013 and the observed area being limited to the City of Zagreb.
