Sažetak

A cycle of frescos in the Church of Our Lady of Koruška in Križevci encompasses the whole articulated trefoil sanctuary of the church, including the space of the dome, as well as of the three semi-domes. According to the painted date, the frescos were completed in 1726. An interesting iconographic structure includes the apotheosis of God the Father, surrounded by Old Testament scenes, as well as the passion cycle consisting of eight fields, all connected to the votive statue of the Lamentation of Christ in the middle of the church under the dome. Although recognised as an important opus at the beginning of the Late-Baroque illusionism breakthrough in Croatian countries, the bibliography about this cycle is sporadic and fragmentary, and there has not been a satisfactory attribution to date, that is, affiliation with a certain school of painting. Marija Mirković tried to connect the frescos with the painters of the Pauline Order, Franjo Bobić and Ivan Ranger, which was not adopted. However, the cycle managed to be connected with the Pauline school of painting.
What is more, an observation of similarity of the compositional structure with a composition of Ptuj has not been further elaborated upon. The similarity of these two compositions, which originated in an interval of only couple of years, brings about another context of the frescos in Križevci, the school of painting around Franz Ignaz Josef Flurer, a painter who was active in Upper and Lower Styria (with a workshop in Graz). He was active in the first half of the 18th century and he left behind a significant opus in Styria, mostly in his service of the house of Attems. He did not work on the area of Croatian countries, and therefore there are no preserved works there. Because of this fact, his opus in Croatian bibliography is not widely known.
Based on our comparative analysis, we can discard closer connections of the frescos in the Church of Our Lady of Koruška with the Pauline school of painting, especially Ivan Ranger. The frescos most certainly came about in an immediate connection with the frescos of Ptuj by Ignaz Flurer, but not as his work or a work from his workshop, but most likely as a work of his follower or associate, who left the saturated market of Styria and found a job in nearby Croatia.
