Sažetak

Osteoporosis is one of the most prevalent disease in againg population. Osteoporosis devestating bone diseases in which progressive diminuition of bone mineral density results in fragile bones that are prone to fracture. It is one of the most prevalent disease affects milions of women throught the world. Postmenopausal osteoporosis is major cause of morbidity and mortality in Europe and North America. Approxiately 40-50% of postmenopausal woman experience an osteoporotic fracture by the end of their lives. The lifetime rist of hip fracture is 19%, 15% for vertebral fracure and 16% fo distal forearm fracture. Estimates suggest that at least 12-20% of hip fractures patients die within one year of injury. In both, developed and developing countries, the segment of the population aged 60 years and older is increasing. Worldwide demographic shifts in the eldetly population are relatively recent phenomen. The incidence and prevalence of osteoporosis fractures are increasing. Estimates indicate that the number of hip fracturesoccuring in the world year each will rise from 1,66 million in 1990 to 6,26 million by year 2050. Expected increase in the elderly population over next 20 years in Croatia will also have a significant impressive burden of osteoporosis.
