Sažetak
The article draws attention to the relationships between Begović’s novel Giga Barićeva and his play Without the Third Party, whose text figures both as an autonomous play, and, with minor differences, as the last chapter of the novel. It is argued that the impression regarding the supposed implausibility of the ending of the play (and the novel), denounced as such by contemporary theatre critics, largely stems from the insufficient understanding of the function of events, characters and states of protagonist’s mind described in the second part of the novel, entitled »On the Battlefield«, which links »the battle of sexes« to the context of WWI. However, to thoroughly grasp the meaning and implications of certain motives and passages within that part of the novel which serve as motivations for the final outcome, one should not rely on the premise of analytical realism. Rather, one should take into account Begović’s major intertexts: Joyce’s Ulysses and Freud’s Three contributions to the psychology of love.
