Sažetak
Firstly the article touches upon some improper translations of the English term sustainable development into the Slovene language. Then the fundamental characteristics of the sustainable development concept are introduced. In its present form the paradigm of sustainable development represents a compromise, since it tries to reconcile the idea of growth and development. At the same time radical critics perceive sustainable development concept as a cloak for slightly modified traditional exponential growth paradigm only. Sustainable development concept is founded on specific principles of environmental behavior. Precautionary principle is related to the problem of who should bear the burden of producing the evidence in support of risk existence. Value implications are present already around the agreement on the proper risk existence proof and not only in the later phase of deciding on acceptance or non–acceptance of the risk itself.
Due to environmental risk, public attitude towards science and technology driven progress as a source of welfare, security and freedom enlargement has changed. This thesis is supported by public poll answers analysis.
