Altmetrics – new indicator of scholarly impact on ther social web

Sažetak

In recent years, scientists have been communicating more and more through social network services, and have also started using various reference manager software, thus discovering new channels for knowledge dissemination and scientific discussion. Altmetrics, or tracking scholarly impact on the social Web, although in an early stage of development, may act as supplement to traditional metrics and provide wider insight into research impact. This paper summarizes opportunities, weaknesses and challenges of this new metrics method concerning both researchers and academic librarians.
