Abstract

Due to the rapid development of information and communication technologies and the ever changing habits of our users, one of the goals when we designed and planned a new online catalog of the Zagreb City Libraries was to integrate traditional library services with the new, modern online services which would satisfy the needs of our users, who want to use library catalog and resources remotely and to have better, quicker and easier communication with the library through a contact form on the library’s website. If the libraries want to remain a relevant source of information in the 21st century, they must adopt new business models to satisfy the needs of new generations of users, must know how to respond to the information needs of young people who are constantly on the Internet via their computers or mobile devices. These “new” users want information delivered without delay, regardless of their physical location and device used. Since the information is no longer dependent on the form or physical location, the Zagreb City Libraries has recognized the need to develop new online services through the library’s website and the online catalog, which allow a better virtual presence, visibility, and consequently, an increase in physical visits to the libraries.
