The Traditional Good Week Chants in Solin
Mirko Jankov
Sažetak
Continuing his studies of the traditional chants of Glagolitic provenance in Solin, the author in this paper deals with the Holy Week chants - the antiphon Hosana sinu Davidovu; the hymn Slava, čast i hvala ti; the antiphon Kada je Gospodin ulazio u sveti grad; the antiphon Dajem vam novu zapovjed; the antiphon Razdjeliše među sobom haljine moje, with the psalm Bože moj, Bože moj, zašto si me ostavio; Muka Gospodina našega Isusa Krista; the reply Dođite, poklonimo se; the »reproof« Puče moj; the psalm Ispovidajte se Gospodinu, jer je dobar - that are, in a continuous oral tradition, still fostered by the Pučki pivači Gospe od Otoka choir of Solin. Their deep presence among the religious population of Solin is testified in a particular way by the performances where the traditional church singers, who lead singing the most important parts of the Holy Week rites (here, these are the Ash Wednesday, the Good Thursday and the Good Friday) are still being joined by most part of the believers attending the masses.
The treated chants, except for the »reproof« Puče moj on the Good Friday, are transcribed for the first time here. Besides their interesting melodic characteristics, they also show a diversity of applied structural and performing procedures that - taken as a whole - can be found in the traditional church singing in Solin: from one to four voices, that is,
from soloist expositions and (tenor) duets, to complex group performances of the responsorial type produced in the »Sufferings of Christ«. Today in Solin the Ash Wednesday, the Good Thursday and the Good Friday are the days - because of their concentrated liturgical
symbolism - the richest in singing of the orally inherited traditional chants. Certain single voice chants indicate by their motifs joint roots and closeness to some similar chants sung in the surroundings of Solin (here this is presented by analysing two chants of Klis). The best known titles, related only to the rites of the Holy Week in the church of Our Lady of the Islet (Gospa od Otoka), testify the links of the liturgically intensiest days of the ecclesial year with the particular chants accompanying them. Furthermore, the organic feature (a kind
of musical cyclic quality) is enabled by the presence of the here established recognisable melodic and motif materials in the chants that are still the most popular ones among the population, this having built an inner link making them a kind of the centre of the passionmusical
traditional repertoire in Solin.
