Sažetak
People with spinal cord injury (SCI) often experience severe psychological, psychosocial and cognitive problems and have an increased risk for developing depression, anxiety disorders, addiction, feelings of helplessness, poor coping mechanisms and low self-esteem. As a highly structured, time framed and goal oriented treatment cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) shows high efficiency in reducing the symptoms of mental disorders in people with SCI. Research findings confirm that the implementation of CBT during rehabilitation has significant positive effects on early emotional outcomes in adults with SCI. The short-term efficacy of CBT is confirmed in treatment of depression, anxiety, coping with problems and pain relief in patients with SCI, while significant long-term impact can be discerned in depressive symptoms. In order to establish guidelines for the creation of special CBT programs for the SCI population focus of the future research should be placed on effectiveness of individual cognitive-behavioral techniques in the treatment of specific mental disorders.
