Sažetak
The author presents a fragment of a larger study about Matija Skurjeni (1898-1990) to be published in Germany for the Charlotte Zander Museum in Bonnigheim - (which owns sixty oil paintings and about forty drawings and serigraphs of the artist) - on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the artiste birth. Starting with an analysis of the painting The Boz Who Loveses pigeons(t969), the author discusses the artista liberation from the rules of causality, from time and space, by mixing the rational and irrational, the logical and fantastic, the real and unreal, dream and reality. This tendency, which began to appear in Skurjeni's painting in 1957/58 is brought in relation with certain events in the artist's life, primarily his association with the art historian, critic and poet Mićo Bašičević, head of the Museum of Primitive Art in Zagreb, who became his mentor and encouraged him to probe the depths of subconscious, magic and allusive, fantastic, symbolic and transcendent experience. In his painting the artist transforms the rational into the unreal and irrational, the impossible becomes possible, imagination becomes reality. Skurjeni paints the reality of the unreal.
