Sažetak

The Catholic phenomenologist, Dietrich von Hildebrand, who because of his tireless criticism of both Communism and National Socialism "was put on the Nazi list of those to be condemned to death as early as 1923" (J. Seifert), in his work "Liturgie und Persönlichkeit" (1933) endeavours to examine the concept of a Catholic university and its renewability, thereby contesting the liberal concept of total autonomy. The fundamental tenets of Christianity upon which the education of our youth is based include primarily the Christian teaching on the soul, i.e. the conviction that the human soul does not derive its immortality from itself, but rather from the immortality of God. For this reason man's relationship toward autonomy and truth, as we know it in the new era, must change radically. Indifference towards truth, evident in its most radical form in Communism and Fascism, means in fact that it has completely succumbed to the subjective criterion of the proletariat (in Communism) and the race (in Fascism): this has brought about its total dethronement and a simultaneous relativization of fundamental Christian principles. Thus, the task of the Catholic university is not only to safeguard the religious convictions of its students, but moreso to educate them for an "adequate truth" and for a community in which the spirit of Christ's teachings reigns. Such a university must not be restricted to Catholics only, but rather it must be accessible to every individual who strives to know the real truth. It should not be a "Catholic ghetto", but a meeting place for those having the courage to seek truth.
