Religiosity and Coping

Sažetak
In this article we are presented, firstly, with the basic psychological tenets on stress in general; secondly, we encounter the process of coping with stress followed by a very extensive discussion on the role of religiosity in the coping process. When speaking of stress we must take into account all factors inherent in the notion which may jeopardize the structure and functioning of the organism, the individual's reaction to stressful stimuli and also the consequences thereof. When dealing with the coping process itself, one must consider the following factors: degree of tolerance, emotional reaction, modified behaviour, defence mechanisms, basic structure of the coping process and psychological recommendations for coping.
In the body of the essay entitled "Religiosity in the Coping Process" the following subtopics are addressed: most common religious approaches to the question of responsibility and control in coping ; the relationship between religious and nonreligious coping; types of religious distress in the coping process and religious traits which contribute to success (or failure) in coping. The optimal answer to the prevailing question, "Does religiosity work in times of difficulty?", is not yes or no, but rather, it depends upon a) the kind of religiosity we are dealing with, b)the personality structure of the individual involved, and c) the particular situation with which the individual must cope. Thus, we can conclude that religiosity may be very advantageous in coping with stress, it may be irrelevant but also harmful. Despite the fact that some religious institutions may be defective and despite the possibility of immature applications or deviant forms of religiosity in the coping process, these cannot overshadow the prominent role of religion in determining one's capability to endure and maintain one’s purpose in life in times of crisis. Furthermore, the results of experimental research testify to religion's positive role.
