Sažetak

The author briefly informs us about some of the theoretical approaches concerning the multidimensional issue of labour motivation. A research project based on these approaches has been conducted by means of a survey with questionnaires, canvassing a heterogeneous sample of workers of the city of Zagreb. The intention was to detect the labour motives most stimulating for workers and to define, referring to the analysis of the obtained results, a hierarchical scale of proffered motives and also to establish the role in forming this scale played by the socio-economical status of the examinees. A number of incipient hypotheses are given and their confirmation analysed by adequate statistical methods.
The survey has pointed out that the workers in question are usually most motivated by extrinsic factors such as: personal income, satisfactory labour conditions, a better relationship between workers and executives etc., while most of the workers display little interest in intrinsic factors such as: participation in management, a more respectable job, an interesting one or a job involving responsibility.
Due to a small number of examinees (133) and a »wide variety« of them, serious generalizations cannot be made. Therefore, the purpose of this survey is primarily to induce reflection or, perhaps, to initiate a more extensive project of similar intention.
