Formation of the Yugoslav Working Class and External Migration

Sažetak
Besides traditional overseas migration contemporary Yugoslav society has experienced the process of mass labour migration from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s. The migration process has continued and is reflected on the one hand in returnee flows, and on the other hand in the development of permanent emigration in Europe and an ever greater »brain drain«. The author) develops the concept that external migration effects social structure not only in a quantitative, but in a qualitative sense as well; it especially effects then (non)formation of the Yugoslav working class. Hence the migration factor should be included in research and discussion on the social structure of contemporary Yugoslav society. The author critically treats the question of migrants being a part of the social structures of either the country of origin or the receiving country. As opposed to the limited standpoints of immigration and emigration countries, he proposes that an interdisciplinary migration science should be constituted from the standpoint of the migrants themselves.
