Sažetak
The Museum of Slavonia’s library stock preserves publications issued in Osijek, articles on famous and acclaimed citizens of Osijek and printed material with topics related to Osijek. The library stock of Osijek magazines which is of exceptionally numerous and diverse themes covers the period from the end of the 1870s to the end of the World War II. The foundation of the Osijek periodicals was related to the emergence of newspapers which, in the time of a search for an appropriate form and content, resembled magazines. Thus, the period lasting to the end of the 19th century can be called “the period of magazine journalism”.
The complete number of Osijek magazines, several hundreds of which have been stored at the library, has, unfortunately, not been preserved and, thus it is not completely known. Editions from certain years have been reduced to only several copies and some issues are known only from secondary sources.
The city image, its economic, cultural, educational, scientific , sport and entertainment activities and events can be read about in Gospodar (Master), Hrvatske pčele (Croatian Bees), Glasnik slavonskih liječnika (Herald of Slavonian Doctors), Kazalište (Theatre), Književni prilog (Literary Supplement), Sport (Sport), Enigma (Enigma) and others.
Some of the magazines that in early stages took shape according to the justly rules of magazine printing characteristic for the period were and still are a valuable source of information.
The magazine collection - a rich source of cultural and historical information is interesting in the museo-logical sense, as a collection of publication which illustrates practices and habits of the Osijek citizens who published and read their publications.
