Sažetak

Reading is a complex skill that consists of specific eye movements, called fixations and saccades, which are in constant interchange during reading. Fixations refer to the maintenance of the visual gaze on a single location within a text, while saccades are quick movements between two fixations. Comparing the durations of fixations and saccades can provide information about the effectiveness of reading. For individuals with dyslexia, reading can be difficult for a number of reasons. According to the theory of visual noise, one reason for these difficulties is certain characteristics of text fonts.
This study attempts to examine whether fonts have an impact on reading in people with dyslexia. An eye-tracking device was used to measure participants’ reading rate, number of fixations and regression saccades while reading three texts written in different fonts (Times New Roman, Arial Italic and Dyslexie). Texts were balanced to be almost identical in length, complexity and main topic, but were different in content. Superficial reading by participants was avoided by introducing a short questionnaire at the end of the reading task. Apart from the described objective measures, a subjective evaluation of fonts was also taken into account as a variable describing the individual impression of the impact that each font has on reading. The study included eight adults with dyslexia. Font effect was examined using the non-parametric Friedman test. The subjective evaluation scores of fonts were analyzed descriptively. Statistical analysis of the results demonstrated no significant difference among the three examined fonts. In consideration of these results, it is assumed that font type does not have a significant impact on reading efficacy in people with dyslexia.
