Abstract

The Best Linear Unbiased Prediction - method was used to evaluate breeding values of sires for milk production traits in Holstein- Friesian population in Croatia. The analysis was carried out on a sample of 4659 first lactation records and 35 sires in all for the period of three years. The statistical model included farm, year, season, age at first calving and days open as fixed environmental effects and sire effects at random. The grouping of sires (based on birth year of sires) provided the elimination of differences between subpopulations taking into account the genetic trend.
