Climate characteristics of the central Istrian region and the favourable conditions for woody cultures growing

Climate is a collection of characteristic atmospheric conditions of a certain area over a longer period of time. In the evaluation of the favourable conditions of a certain area for the woody cultures growing, the evaluation of the climate is very significant. For woody cultures most commonly the data on the air temperatures (medium, minimum, maximum and the appearance of temperature thresholds), the precipitation figures (average values and retroactive periods), air humidity, insolation and wind are processed.
For the central Istria area, climatic data for the meterological station Pazin are processed, for the period of 1964 – 2004. According to the meteorological data, it is obvious that in the central Istria region there are good climatic conditions for the woody cultures growing, especailly apples, but also other cultures (pears, peaches, plums). Even though the apple planting has started only recently, according to climatic conditions the possibilities are much bigger.
The average annual temperature ranges within 10.9 to 11.8 C, while the average air temperature in the vegetation is 15.9 C. The average annual amount of precipitation follows the downward trend, and amounts to 994 mm in the last decade, while during vegetation the average quantity of precipitation comes up to 659 mm. The other climatic parametres; the air humidity, insolation and wind, do not present a serious limitation to the growth of the above mentioned cultures in the central Istrian area.
Since climatic conditions are favourable, it is necessary to conduct a research on the soil characteristics, so that a real picture of the favourable conditions for the woody cultures growing would be gained.
Finally, the selection of microlocation also has a particular significance, that also influences the succesful woody cultures growing.
