Abstract
The behaviour of 7 weaned piglets, cross-breeds Swedish Landrace x Big Yorkshire, was monitored during 48 h. All piglets were provided from a single breed. They were divided into two groups - the experimental and the control group. The piglets in the experimental group received intragastrically 10¹⁰ CFU of the enterotoxigenic Escheichia coli strain, while the control group received pure medium only. The piglets were kept in controlled microclimatic conditions. The frequency and duration of the following behavioural patterns were monitored and noted down, by direct observation: eating, drinking, lying, standing, urinating, defecating, rooting, playing, biting object and running. The obtained data were statistically analysed. The average behavioural differences between the experimental and he control group were then compared applying the t-test. Significant differences between the experimental and the control group were found in the frequency and duration of eating, lying and defecating behaviour, as well as in the frequency of object biting. The analyisis didn't reveal any significant differences considering other behavioural patterns. The differences in eating, lying and defecating behaviour could be atributed to the processes initiated by the applied E. Coli strain.
