Sažetak

The river Sava, near Zagreb, is polluted chiefly with waste waters originating from the separation and washing of coal. It contains considerable quantities of organic impurities and humanic acids which represent a grave obstacle in food industry, in the chemism of boiler water and in operation with ion exchangers. During the period from 13th September to 18th October 1971, the water level of the river Sava was very low (about -150 cm.). The result of this was a high content of organic impurities and increased quantity of huminic acids. When examining the quantity of huminic acids and the KMnO4 consumption both in filtered and non-filtered water as well as in water after the use of various ion exchangers, it was found that ion exchangers remove from water a considerable part of organic substances and huminic acids. The examinations were carried out by means of Czechoslovakian exchangers Ostion KS, Wofatit SBR and Ostion SC, furthermore on the Levatites S-100, M-500 and M-600, as well as on Hungarian Varion AT-400. The effects of the elimination of water soluble huminic acids and organic substances were considerable on Wofatit SBR and Levatit M-600, but even greater elimination effects were obtained with the highly basic Varion AT-400 and adsorptive Ostion SC. The two last mentioned ion exchangers however become very rapidly exhausted.
