Sažetak

Analysed were about 100 samples of sea water taken at characteristic sites on the Yugoslav Adriatic coast from Poree to Dubrovnik. Established were parameters characterizing pure sea water as well as those that are apt to serve for determining the kind and intensity of pollution. It has been found that the sea is not protected against any kind of pollution, notably not from the so-called »accidental pollution« through oil and oil derivates. That is the reason why the country may not join the International Convention on Protection of Coastal Seas. It is shown that a number of requirements of the Regulation concerning the classification of sea waters are not reasonable, and that some of them are but insufficiently defined. The total number of germs on agar-agar (36°C) is in good agreement with data on BPK5, % of saturation with O2, Cl-number, turbidity and colour of sea water. The number of microorganisms determined in the usual manner does not show the real picture of pollution.
