Sažetak

The effectiveness of tetracyclines in the prevention and treatment of radiostrontium poisoning was estimated in female rats aged 8-9 weeks. Different doses of oxytetracyclines (OTC) were applied either intraperitoneally (18.8-300 mg/kg) or orally (600-7500 mg/kg) in rats over a period of 7 days. Strontium-85 was given once either intraperitoneally or orally on the 4th day of experiment. The whole body retention of radiostrontium was determined 72 hours later, at the end of the experiment, in a twin crystal scintillation counter. At lower dose levels the application of OTC had no influence on strontium metabolism. At higher dose levels they caused an increased absorption and retention of radioactive strontium. Our results indicate that oxytetracyclines should not be used in the prevention or treatment of radiostrontium poisoning.
