Sažetak
This paper examines the concept of sustainable development from the economic perspective and discusses related environmental issues at both the global level and in Croatia. The working hypothesis is as follows: By introducing natural resources into the function of production and by introducing multiplicative factors of destruction as a criterion for the approval of new investments and production, sustainable development will become a new face of economy. Research results are based on micro- and macro-economic analyses as well as statistical methods of correlation and regression analysis. There are two main findings: 1) It is necessary to have active environmental protection politics in order to make a swift and successful transition of Croatian economy into a competitive economy with minimal emission of greenhouse gases; and 2) by creating positive demand and introducing multiplicative factors of destruction it is possible to qualitatively and quantitatively change the structure of production and help sustainable development become a new face of economy.
