Sažetak

The period between World Wars in Croatia was marked by a high level of health-promotion activities. The focus of the educational courses was on food hygiene and the prevention of infections, and activities were directed at household organization improvement and raising the overall health awareness. In addition to improving theoretical knowledge, the courses included a diverse, practical work in groups, demonstrations, workshops, and study visits. Public health programs today show the poorest results in changing unhealthy lifestyle habits, which are to be blamed for the epidemic of chronic non-communicable diseases. Health-oriented courses held in Croatia between the World Wars were well planned, organized and pragmatic, and they would still be able to serve as an effective model for the implementation of public health actions today.
