To see daimon? Presentation of selfhood in the novel Proljeća Ivana Galeba (Ivan Galeb’s Springs)

Sažetak
According to Arendt, one's identity remains hidden from the person himself/herself, like the daimon from Greek religion, that accompanies each man throughout his life, always looking over his shoulder from behind and thus visible only to others. As Nancy understands Heidegger, the existent (Man or Dasein) is always already with-others, always already within community. In Arendt's view, through speech and action we insert ourselves into the human world revealing/exposing our uniqeness and distinctness to others. But, what does it mean to expose/reveal oneself? In Arendt's opinion, the story, as a result of speech and deed, exposes/reveals its agent, makes one's daimon visible to others. In order to address the question of storytelling and selfhood in Desnica's novel Ivan Galeb’s Springs, we will take into account the aforementioned considerations. Since Ivan Galeb (the main character and narrator) is an artist in search of his art and his identity, questions raised by Blanchot in his longstanding discussion on literature will be considered in relation to the novel.
