Sažetak
This study focuses on the main character of Begović's novel Giga Barićeva, arguing for its independence from a straightforward reading that would interpret it in terms of gender categories. In the course of the analysis, a special attention has been paid to both the motivation of other characters from the perspective of systems theory and to the relation of the main character with the novel as a whole by means of systems theory apparatus. When juxtaposed with Giga Barićeva, other characters demonstrate coherence and dependence on Giga's decisions whereas Giga Barićeva is created as a character who resists unified interpretations revealing thereby narrative procedures typical of Modernism. Due to its open structure, this female character enables a vast historical background to be included in the novel, as well as genre manipulation and inclusion of numerous secondary genres. The author in the end argues for Giga Barićeva to be a Modernist character novel, the category that escapes previous classificatory and interpretative deadlocks.
