Occupational exposure to cadmium in the production of miner's lamps and alkaline storage batteries

Sažetak
In September 1968 a group of 78 workers employed in the production of miner's lamps and alkaline storage batteries was examined and compared to 69 workers from the control group. The two groups were basically homogeneous. The specific working period of the exposed to cadmium was relatively short - 6,82 ± 4, 12 years. It was found that cadmium concentration in the working environment was pretty high (0,10-30,4 mg/m3 of air). In 41 per cent of exposed workers cadmium concentrations in the blood ranged from 4 to 100 gamma/100 ml and in the urine of 63 per cent of workers from 12 to 140 gamma/liter. A high percentage of subjective disturbances and noncharacteristic symptoms of chronic cadmium poisoning were also found while the characteristic symptoms of chronic intoxication were very scarce or completely absent. Such a poor symptomatology of cadmium lesions could be explained by a relatively short specific working period and by efficient protective measures.
