Abstract

In the information age in which we live it is exceptionally important to be able to retrieve information as fast and easily as
possible. The availability of information has for some time been the major or at least a minor theme of different conferences,
events, roundtables and general discussions. Perhaps in other activities information accessibility can be achieved more easily,
perhaps with greater difficulty, but in the museum activity it is equally necessary and is for certain an important segment of it.
However, it is very clear that accessibility of information cannot be sustained if it is not achieved in correlation with its protection,
i.e. protection of data. Luckily, awareness of the great and unquestionable importance of data protection does exist, but on
the whole it is not clear how this security is to be achieved, and how much it is or is not achieved is dependent on the answer
to this problem. Neither accessibility nor protection of data is the theme of this contribution, but it is important to mention
them in the introductory part. As part of the project for the computerisation of the museum activity in the Republic of Croatia
that is coordinated by the Museum Documentation Centre, in the 2010-2012 period, a system for the secure storage of the data
of the museum system of the Republic of Croatia was developed. Until then data security in museums was not systematically
organised or centralised, and was carried out sporadically, which means that the data were as a whole not adequately protected
against possible loss or destruction. In order to ensure protection of the data, it was necessary to devise and implement
a system capable of ensuring accessibility of backup copies should the original data be destroyed as a result of any technical
troubles.
Every day we produce more and more data, and often forget about protecting them. In the museum activity, there are not many
records of the disappearance of data, but even these cases could have been obviated if account had been taken of their security
in good time. Data protection and security certainly depends, in some cases more and in some cases less, on us. For that reason
it is our objective to make staff in museum institutions not only aware of the need for, but to encourage in them the habit of
making, data backups.
